Instruments for the visualization of debates like the ones we use on this site have the potential to solve this problem. Debate-maps tell you at a glance which topics have been brought up in a discussion and how they relate to each other. Contributions can be made right to the point – without continuously summing up and repeating the preceding discussion.
As debate-maps basically function like a tree (along whose branches users can follow), all top-level arguments remain equally visible – even in the case that one line of argument might be better developed because the participant favoring it simply has more resources to do so.
Also, the techniques allow the filtering out of new arguments from mere opinion. New Arguments are new knots and branches in the tree – focused in content and neatly fitted into the overall discourse. But we also offer possibilities for personal expression and rhethorical elaboration. Where opinions are concerned, we offer several options. Personal comments can easily be attached to the knot-elements. This will be the standard procedure. Moreover, there will be the possibility to have something like a ‘speakers corner’ at some stage in the debate, giving users the opportunity for a more persuasive discourse – followed, perhaps, by an opinion-poll.
So far, instruments for collaborative debate-mapping have been successfully tested within groups of a few hundred people. Our aim is to bring the benefits of the new approach to the broader public. We will do this within the context of issues in science and innovation. In order to achieve our goals, we will offer a rich editorial integeration of the mentioned techniques. Also, we will actively conduct community organizing and seek connections to offline-events to draw the relevant stakeholders into a debate.
