The second day of the Media for Science Forum in Madrid started with a discussion about the possibilities, opportunjities and problems, that arise for journalism with the new media. Are blogs a threat for journalism or a gift? Will the web kill the radio star? Is science journlism obsolete, when scientists communicate with the public directly, using web-technologies? What are the values of journalistic skills and do they apply for new media, too?

This is what the final declaration of the Media for Science Forum says:

Europe must renew its commitment to science: spreading the culture of science, and extend access to scientific and technological information and educated participation.

But some topics probably still need to be discussed: Are government subsidies for science journalism, as the declaration suggests, a good approach? How can journalistic independency be secured? Is "dissemination of science" the proper way to think about science journalism?

How should science communicators change in the age of blogging scientists and scientific blogs from amateurs? A blogger, a science editor, and a science communicator elaborate on their way to deal with and use the new challenges and opportunities.
